I cleaned up some of those files in the root of the http://ftp.  It was a lot of work junk I'd stuck in there.  Should all be gone now.

Im going to do a better evaluation of whats there and essentially eliminate what doesnt belong.  In order to do something with the main MI site, I think we'll need to spend the time cleaning up whats out there.  There are a few images and HTML pages there that I dont think need to be there any longer.  I'll try to focus on that before Friday night.

Ive been wanting to do a site overhaul for quite some time, but haven't had the time to do it all myself.  I'd love for both of us to tackle it together, so Im not the only one able to maintain it.  Ultimately, I'd like to get to the point where we're able to have a nice frontpage on MI.  What I would really like is to be able to link to affiliate sites and be able to post updates that way.  I havent really thought about it much lately and I havent even looked at Joomla since 1.4 at least, so there's some work to be done.  Also havent looked at WordPress in the recent past either.  Either of those tools would be good, it just depends on what kind of content you want to post.  WordPress is more of a blogging tool only, whereas Joomla has other abilities.  Im all for trying to figure out Joomla and what it would take to get a site designed with it.  I think you could even base the site on the Wiki format.  Really just depends on what the intention is.  Regardless of what we use for the MI site, I'd really like to integrate the forum into whatever we're doing.  The forum design needs an overhaul as well, and I'd love to integrate that into whatever we do.  As far as the MP site is concerned, as I said, I'll be more than happy to help with the design of that.  I know that if you wanted to showcase some of your artwork, there are plugins that you can add to Joomla that would allow you to do so.

Lots of things to think about here, but ultimately, what I'd like to get to is a point where we're not thinking about the design.  I want CONTENT!!!! And a Community!

I loaded it on Monday and so far, I can see lots of sites that arent compatible with it.  As far as the look and feel, it does feel a lot like Chrome.  One of the things I was hoping for (and maybe just because I havent looked hard enough yet) is to be able to pin websites on the Windows 7 taskbar.  This would be valuable for me to use Logmein, since its a site I go to every day at work, and would like to have in a separate window.

Typically, when Im opening new tabs, I just use Ctrl + T but thats mostly just because I try to use certain keyboard shortcuts to make things a little faster.  I use the Windows + D a lot to clear my desktop on a frequent basis. But I can see your frustration with the menu changes.

Ive not yet tried firefox sync.  I was using Google Bookmarks prior to FF4 and found an extension that would let me see those bookmarks on the toolbar. Now that the menu bar is gone (you can turn it back on in the options), I may have to find a different approach.

Havent noticed any speed improvements myself.  I thought there was some talk about tabs running in processes, similar to Chrome.  I may have to look into that further.  If Logmein had support for Chrome, I would actually give up on Firefox completely.  I realize that Firefox is extendable, and I love that about Firefox.  However, I feel like Firefox has just become bloated and slow.  Even after the upgrade, only being logged into a few websites, I noticed that my memory usage was still up in the 150 mb range, and I wasnt even on youtube or anything like that (which I know chews up more RAM).

On the update tool: I have no idea, I'd have to go back and look at it, as I havent looked at it in ages!

Joomla's pretty basic to set up.  The biggest issue is templates and presentation, thats where the custom coding comes in.  Nothing outside of our realm though, just needs to be thought out.

If you want to overhaul the MP site, we can certainly come up with something and I'd be happy to help in any way I can.  Lets talk about this offline sometime and we'll get some plans together to start hammering something out.

Well, some of the stuff on there is stuff that isnt mine.  I have two other domains that are hosted from our FTP server.  The troop935 stuff is for boy scout troop 935, so that needs to not be touched.  Also, the tlth stuff is for my mom's website and that isnt to be touched.  Finally, Steve's website is also hosted through us.  So that isnt to be touched.

I'll take a gander at whats out there and see if it needs to be cleaned up.

    I'll let you know.

I'll tell you, with virtual servers, I have a box dedicated to just doing that.  Mostly right now, its just for testing purposes, but its worked out quite well.  I'd love to understand the VM technology a bit better and I'd really like to get my hands on a copy of VMware, with enough time to actually sit down and USE IT.  Right now, the box Im using as a VM host server is a custom built single quad core 3.2 Ghz AMD Phenom X4, 8 GB of RAM, 2 HDD's (primary 160 GB OS, secondary 1 TB, both Western Digital) with Windows Server 2008 using Hyper-V.  Currently, I use the box to set up VM's for testing customer environments and various other tests, including documenting our installation process, which I have to admit, has been a savior.  What I like about Hyper-V, from a production perspective vs VirtualBox is that if a VM is running and the server has to be rebooted, the VM's automatically come back up, they dont have to be restarted.  I love VirtualBox and its quite useful, but for a production environment, the free version just doesnt cut it, as it shouldnt.  Resources are so important with a VM though.  Ive found that on my system, I can allocate up to 3 cores and 6 GB of RAM without any degradation to the host system.

If you wanted to get into a weekend project, Im thinking we could build a Linux box and load the necessary stuff to get a wiki server running.  Been awhile since we went old school on a project like that and I think we could both benefit from something like that.

Im very interested in how you're envisioning the wiki to work with the site.  Certainly we need to discuss this, but Im all ears.  Ive been thinking about a site overhaul for awhile, but time hasnt really been on my side as of late.

Ive been pondering what to do about the site lately.  I'd like to make more of it than what it is.  And there is certainly some things we can do to make MI more of a site than what we've done in the past.  Our problem has always been the “more info later” issue.  If we decide we're gonna do something, we obviously should do it in test first (pretty easy really).  But we should talk about what we want to accomplish, then look at whats out there in the OSS world (WordPress, Joomla, etc).  Im not opposed to a Wiki, but it would be a lot of extra overhead for creating static pages that any CMS could actually do.

My custom solution hasnt been worked on in months.  Kinda hit the back burner there for awhile.  I'd like to do more with it, but lately, I just dont have the time.

I wouldnt be adverse to doing something like WordPress, with a custom template, where we could each blog about certain things.  WordPress will let you create static pages, if we wanted to do Abouts or things like that.

As I said, I'd like to do more with the site.  Ultimately, we need to come up with a goal and stick with it, at least, as time allows.

Lets discuss further at the Christmas Party or something.

Seems like you and I are the only ones who actually make posts on the board anymore.  I think maybe we need to do something about that at some point in time.  Although, with the way our schedules are….who the hell knows.

Been thinking about a different layout for the site, but havent put a lot of thought into it.  Too many other things going on.

Can you hear me now?  Its been well over six months since anyone (including myself) has posted to the forum.  Seems like we've all died off and gone to other places.  I realize we're all busy.  Hope to see someone come around.

    Just a few things.

Windows 7 is due for release in October.  Looks like its gonna be decent this time.  Ive been running the RC since its release and it seems to be pretty stable.  Ive only blue screened it once, and that was from trying to install then uninstall a program that isnt supported in Vista or in 7.  Otherwise, it looks pretty solid.  Also, today, I removed over 90 GB of data from an external HDD connected through USB2.0 and I have to say, I was impressed that it took so little time (around 2-3 minutes).  XP certainly doesnt react that well.

Netbooks seem to be all the rage now.  Anyone got any real experience with this?  And if so, are you ready for the cloud?  Seems to be the way people are going these days.  If you try to do anything locally on these machines, be prepared to be disappointed, as they're not designed for this type of computing.  Netbooks are primarily to be used for the web and being in the cloud, which could take Google to a whole new level with their online applications, such as Documents, Spreadsheets, etc.

Speaking of Google, I recently started using Google Bookmarks more and more.  It provides a nice central repository for all of your bookmarks that you can access from anywhere.  If you're a Firefox user, you can get an extension (GBookmarks) that will add a menu item to your menu bar for easy access to your Google Bookmarks within Firefox.

Thats about all I have right now.  Havent been tinkering much due to health issues and work (as usual).

    Until next time

While I think it sucks that the guy is sick, Im not gonna cry over it or anything like that if something bad happens to him.  I think its ridiculous to think that Apple is going to go under if something happens to Steve Jobs.  Sure, Apple had a hard time before when Steve Jobs wasnt with Apple, but they didnt go under.  They will figure out a way to stay in business if something happens.  Besides, it takes more than one man to operate a business like Apple.  Anyone who thinks that he is Apple is just plain dumb.

Now, onto fanboys.  The whole concept of someone being that devoted to anything is just stupid.  Its short sighted at best to believe that something is the best thing ever since sliced bread.  Sure, there's every reason to like what they have to offer, but to me, its just not an objective view.  Basically, you focus on everything good and nothing bad.  Microsoft seems to have the exact opposite reaction.  What has Apple done that is really all that revolutionary?  You have the iPod, which you need specific software in order to get music to and from it (iTunes), which is slow and unintuitive at best.  You have the iPhone, which is probably more phone than most people need.  You have iLife and iWork.  For some reason, Apple (and their 'fanbois') seem to always trip my iDontGiveARatsAss complex.  I think fanboys of anything need a reality check.  What you have isnt the best.  It may be good, but all good products have their flaws.  I wouldnt consider Windows, Unix/Linux or any other piece of software to be perfect in any way.  They all have their positives and negatives.  I use Windows for a lot of reasons, but quite frankly, Windows has pretty much all of the things I need.  And its just an OS people.  Apple is just a company.  They dont make the best EVERYTHING.  In fact, I would argue that some of their products are inferior.  I can get a superior MP3 player thats way more intuitive to use.  I can get a PC that has just as good of hardware or better for half the price.  There's nothing, in my opinion, that makes them stand out.  And from what I read, their support services SUCK.  Im not about to pay top dollar for something that quite frankly isnt worth my money.

To all you fanboys of any computing resource, hardware resource, or whatever, GET OVER YOURSELVES.

That is a very interesting read.

The one benefit to this is that if you use the same hardware on all systems in the cluster, then you could very easily take an image of one machine and use that image to dump down on the others.  This makes building and maintaining the farm a lot easier than building each system individually.  Not only that, but you get consistency in the build, even if its wrong.  If something does go wrong, you're pretty much guaranteed to have it go wrong on all the boxes, not just one.

With the amount of data transfer they're talking about here, I definitely agree with the gigabit minimum.  If you can afford it, gigabit fiber is actually a better way to go, as fiber is obviously faster than ethernet/copper.

Hot swappable RAID configurations are always good when you're talking about having a system that needs to be operational almost 100% of the time, especially during a data crunch period.  Assuming one of the disks does go bad, you can remove the one drive, put in the new one, and the OS will probably automatically begin stripping the drive.  The only downside to this is that you waste CPU cycles working on stripping the data.  But, if I had to choose between CPU cycles and system downtime, I think I'd rather use the extra CPU cycles.

Oh and by the way, did I mention…*drool*

Dude, Spring cannot come soon enough.  Dont get me wrong, I like snow and I like winter, and part of me likes the fact that I have to shovel the snow out of my driveway, now that Im a proud homeowner.  BUT enough is enough.  Almost every frickin day for the last two weeks Ive had to either shovel the driveway or clean snow off of my car.  The worst part is that my windshield wiper sprayer is frozen up, so I cant even clean off my windsheild.  Not to mention the fact that my car has a nice coat of salt on it now.

Im also excited for spring because my yard needs some serious attention.  Under the foot of snow is leaves from the fall and severely overgrown grass that desperately needs cut.  Ive got quite a few outdoor projects I'd like to be working on that have to wait until it warms up.  Believe me when I tell you that I will be super pumped when it starts warming up.

I noticed that too.  I think the post you wrote and the new board for new member intros are both a good idea.  At least it makes it clear.  At some point, I may take a look at the registration process and alter it with the rules in there.  That way, at least new members see what they're expected to do.  You can still read posts without signing up, so it seems pointless to me to sign up if you have no intentions of posting.  If you're here to read, fine.  Otherwise, sign up and friggin POST.

One thing I forgot to mention, which the above article doesnt, is that there are some improvements to the Windows Firewall.  It now actually looks more like a firewall, where you can manage inbound and outbound traffic.  I dread the day I have to differentiate the two for my users.

More details on this when I get a few minutes to play with it.  This is only the second good thing I see coming in 7.
